Turn text, slides and notes into flashcards automatically

If you were to ask a high school or college student what their preferred method for studying is, chances are they'll mention flashcards. That's because this effective study tool allows students to reinforce key concepts and retain information efficiently through active recall. This strengthens memory retention by requiring the brain to retrieve information. The good news? Today you can create flashcards with AI instead of writing them one by one.

This tutorial is an excerpt designed to help you create flashcards with AI and review them with Algor. To learn more about how to use Algor, visit the official Algor Education guide.

However, manually creating handwritten flashcards is a tedious and time-consuming affair, especially when dealing with large volumes of study material. Even digital flashcards take a long time to make, which can really cut into your exam review time.

That’s where AI-powered flashcard makers come in. Instead of writing out individual questions and answers, AI flashcard creators like Algor Education can generate flashcards from lecture notes, PDFs, slides, or even handwritten notes in a few minutes. Algor Education's AI-driven flashcard maker simplifies this process, saving time and improving the way you study.

This article will walk you through the step-by-step process you can follow to automatically create engaging flashcards for study at any educational level using Algor Education. Check it out!

Step-by-Step Guide: How to Generate Flashcards on Algor Education

Step 1: Sign Up or Log in to Algor Education

Go to the Algor sign up page and create your free account with your email address, Google or Apple, or log in if you already have one. You'll land on the Home, your starting point to create material for exam preparation, upcoming tests or quizzes, or your daily learning. Algor works on the web and in the iOS and Android apps.

Step 2: Choose Your Source

From the Home, click Create an Algor Set. Algor Education supports multiple sources, enabling you to create flashcards from your course materials:

  • From your material – Upload PDFs (for example your slides), Word documents or images, take a photo of handwritten notes or printed textbook pages, paste text such as class notes, course summaries or your syllabus, paste a web or YouTube link, or pick files you already keep in Algor.
  • From a topic – No notes at hand? Type a topic and the AI researches it and writes the content for you.

Before generating, you tell Algor who the content is for, how it should read (language, format and examples) and in which language you want it. Because the flashcards are generated from your own material, they stick to what you uploaded, and they follow the index of the Set, section by section, so the key topics are covered in an organized way.

Step 3: Generate Your Study Set

The AI analyzes your material and proposes an index of sections and pages: accept it or change it with Edit with AI, then press Generate. In a few minutes Algor builds a Set, a structured study guide that includes:

  • Concept Maps – A visual representation of topics, helping students connect key ideas through mind mapping and concept mapping.
  • Summaries – Condensed, concise versions of the main points of each page for quick reference and review, next to an audio overview you can listen to.
  • Flashcards – AI-generated flashcards with prompts and answers for effective memorization, which you start from the Set with Review with flashcards.

  • Assessments – A customizable quiz generated from your Set, featuring question types such as multiple choice, true or false, completion, matching and open answers, to help you test yourself and see how you're progressing.

This combination of powerful tools helps you digest information in a much easier way than simply relying on traditional textbooks or study material. By combining concept maps and flashcards, summaries and assessments, you have everything you need to do really well on your next test or exam.

The best part? There's no time-consuming design process here! Algor creates and organizes this entire study set for you in an easily accessible format. You'll have everything you need to study, perfectly organized, at the click of a few buttons.

Step 4: Review Your Flashcards with Spaced Repetition

Algor Education's flashcards are built so you can make the most of active recall. To start, click Review with flashcards and choose what to study: the whole set, a section, or a single page. Then click Start review: Algor shows the cards that are due today, plus the ones you have never studied. Each card follows the usual structure: a question on the front, and the answer on the back. Press space or click the card to flip it.

Then rate honestly how well you knew it: Impossible, Hard, Easy or Very easy. Your rating decides when the card comes back: cards you find hard return soon, cards you know well come back less and less, and a card you keep rating well is eventually considered learned. On mobile you can also swipe, left for Hard and right for Easy. If you need to stop, choose Save and exit to keep what you rated so far.

Algor generates two kinds of flashcards from your material. Question-and-answer flashcards give you a prompt, a little like a clue, to get you thinking about a topic, with a clear answer on the back. Fill-in-the-blank flashcards show a sentence with missing terms that you have to recall: this adds a nuance to spaced repetition, prompting your brain to think about a subject from a different angle.

A fill-in-the-blank flashcard: complete the sentence from memory
The back of the fill-in-the-blank flashcard with the missing words: Henry, Edward, Mary
The back of the card shows the missing words so you can check your answer

This way you spend your time on the concepts you still need to practice, and you can better understand core concepts and learn in a more efficient and structured way.

Step 5: Printing and Sharing Your Flashcards

For students who prefer physical study aids, Algor also lets you print a set of flashcards for offline review. The print and export options live in the options menu of a page:

  • Use Print tools to print a page or only some of its tools.
  • Use Export set if you want to export the whole Set.
  • Use Share page, or share the whole Set, to study with classmates and work together to get that A!
  • Enjoy an offline study session anywhere you go!
